The Suez Canal recorded its highest monthly revenue ever, earning $629 million in ship transit fees, a source told Reuters.

Monthly revenue in April was 13.6 percent higher than a year ago, according to a statement from Osama Rabie, chairman of the canal administration.

The total number of ships transiting 193 kilometers of water reached 1,929 and was up 6.3 percent from a year ago.

Rabie added that the number of oil tankers, gas carriers and container ships in April increased by 25.8%, 12% and 9% respectively compared to last year.
