Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users, brace yourselves for some major updates starting August 1, as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) rolls out new regulations. As stated in Goodreturns, these changes are crafted to enhance system efficiency, manage congestion, and fortify security measures across UPI platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
Balance Check and Linked Accounts Viewing Limit
From August 1, users will be able to check their bank account balance up to 50 times per day per UPI app. This new rule aims to alleviate backend congestion caused by multiple balance queries during peak times. Similarly, viewing linked bank accounts will be limited to 25 times per day per app. This regulation is expected to ease the burden on the system and streamline operations.
Autopay Transactions Scheduled
Big news for autopay users! Recurring transactions for services such as OTT subscriptions and utilities will now only process in designated off-peak windows, before 10:00 AM and between 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This will aid in balancing server loads and ensuring smooth processing during these hours.
Transaction Status Check and Inactivity Clause
For those occasionally experiencing transaction delays, it’s crucial to note that status checks can be made only thrice per transaction, with at least a 90-second gap between requests. This adjustment aims to reduce system strain and improve real-time responsiveness.
Additionally, the new rules specify that if your UPI-linked mobile number is inactive for 90 consecutive days, your account will be automatically deactivated. Regular usage is recommended to keep the UPI services uninterrupted.
What’s Not Changing
While several new restrictions are being introduced, the current transaction limits remain unchanged. The standard Rs. 1 lakh per transaction limit continues, with certain sectors like healthcare and education enjoying a higher cap of Rs. 5 lakh.
A Smooth Transition for Most Users
These updates are designed to ensure a seamless user experience while maintaining system integrity. Regular users may not notice significant changes; however, heavy users and businesses will need to adapt to these new constraints.
NPCI’s strategic updates reinforce efforts to keep UPI functioning at optimal levels, particularly during periods of high traffic, safeguarding both speed and security for all users. By integrating these changes, the UPI ecosystem looks forward to offering a more streamlined and secure service to its growing user base.
