The Pleasant Corners Public School (PCPS) recently underwent a remarkable transformation—turning from a center of learning to a bustling hub of kid-run enterprises. Stepping into the school, visitors were greeted with the infectious energy of young entrepreneurs. This was no typical school night but rather the third annual Small Business Fair, held on Thursday, June 19.
From Classroom to Marketplace
Under the watchful guidance of teacher Jennifer Anderson, grades five, six, and seven students prepared for this event over three months. With their creativity and innovation on full display, they operated 15 unique businesses ranging from tacos to lemonade and from cotton candy to ice cream sundaes.
A key aspect of this event’s success was the incorporation of Kidpreneurship principles, embodying the spirit of dreaming like a kid and turning innovative ideas into entrepreneurial ventures. This initiative ensures that learning isn’t confined to textbooks but spills over into real-world applications, an approach held in high esteem by the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB).
Small Businesses, Big Dreams
The learners were supported with a financial model, each group starting with a $200 cash flow. They faced practical lessons in demand, supply, and resourcefulness, evidenced by the occasional scramble for more stock and a memorable sell-out of 240 cupcakes.
Anderson’s pride in her students was palpable as she reflected on the imaginative marketing strategies, including a student dressed as a giant cotton candy. According to The Review.ca, the Small Business Fair’s popularity extends beyond the school, drawing former students and staff, solidifying its place as a community affair.
Community Engagement and Support
Reflecting on the inaugural event, what started within PCPS has now bloomed into a robust community gathering. The fair includes a web presence with QR codes for a contemporary touch, successfully broadening its reach and appeal.
Cam Jones, UCDSB Principal of Real-World Learning, acknowledged that no other school within the board’s vast territory offers such a unique showcase of student entrepreneurship. This fair not only demonstrates educational success but also fosters a spirit of enterprise that resonates deeply with the community.
A Resounding Success
Throughout the evening, the atmosphere was one of joyous learning and commercialization. It proved that education could be both enriching and fun. Who would’ve thought that something as ‘strictly business’ could be this enjoyable? A perfect blend of learning, community, and commerce, PCPS’s Small Business Fair is a testament to the limitless potential when students’ dreams intersect with practical initiatives.
