In an age where financial literacy is paramount, Travis Credit Union, in collaboration with Winters High School, has revolutionized youth education through the Generation Wealth program. The program, a successor of Mad City Money, aims to fill the financial knowledge gap by giving students a hands-on experience in managing money and making informed financial decisions.

Bridging the Financial Literacy Gap

The program is more than just a workshop; it’s a gateway for seniors and Wolfskill Career Readiness Academy students to gain real-world financial experience. According to Winters Express, since its inception in 2009, this initiative has reached over 13,000 students, and now, its revamped version continues to empower future generations with indispensable money management skills.

The Four Pillars of Financial Wellness

Generation Wealth operates through a structured framework focusing on four key areas: Plan, Save, Spend, and Borrow. Through these pillars, students learn to create financial roadmaps, control savings, manage expenses, and understand borrowing—offering a comprehensive approach to financial literacy that extends beyond theoretical knowledge.

Interactive Learning in Practice

A cornerstone of the program’s success is its interactive simulation. Students engage in managing household budgets and make decisions about spending, all within a supportive, risk-free setting. Volunteers play critical roles, offering guidance and posing as financial stakeholders to enhance the realism of the scenarios.

Real-World Financial Choices

Within this simulation, students encounter choices that reflect real-life expenses. At stations mimicking everyday financial decisions, such as the fashion and grooming booth, students quickly learn the implications of their financial priorities. The experience is eye-opening, revealing the impact of choices on their financial wellbeing—sometimes requiring re-evaluation and smarter decision-making.

Community Collaboration: A Pillar of Success

Behind the scenes, the community’s collaboration is instrumental. The Kiwanis Club of Winters, alongside local businesses and the school district, fosters an environment where students receive guidance from experienced professionals. Their collective contribution ensures the program’s success and supports students as they tackle financial challenges.

Expanding the Reach

As the program continues to flourish, a new cohort of students from Winters Middle School will soon benefit from this immersive experience. On March 14, eighth graders will also step into the world of financial literacy, laying a foundation for their future financial endeavors.

Generation Wealth remains a testament to the power of practical education and community support in shaping graduates equipped with the skills to navigate the financial complexities of modern life. For those interested in joining this impactful initiative as volunteers, sign-up opportunities remain open.
