The NBS China Manufacturing Business Activity Index rose to 49.4, compared to the forecast of 49.2.
In the non-manufacturing sector the index was 52.6 points, against a forecast of 52.3.
However, the composite business activity index showed a decline to 51.7 from 52.5.
